American pine sideboard attr. to Ate van Apeldoorn for 'Houtwerk Hattem', 1970's. These came out of a school.
In 1958, van Apeldoorn founded his own wooden furniture factory, which was later renamed 'Ate van Apeldoorn meubelmakerij' that later became 'Houtwerk Hattem'. He specialized in making solid wood furniture, mainly from oak and pine.
van Apeldoorn's style was influenced by the organic design movement, with simple, functional shapes. His furniture was often constructed using traditional wooden joints, such as mortise and tenon joints, without the use of nails or screws.
Despite his success, van Apeldoorn remained an independent craftsman throughout his career and refused to mass-produce his designs. He always emphasized the quality of his furniture and the durability of the materials.
Ate van Apeldoorn left an important legacy in the design and production of solid wood furniture and his creations are still highly regarded today.
